*** Posted 2025-12-04 *** “Space Sailors” Seeking Download Help from Ham Radio Operators. Students at Cornell University are seeking participation from radio amateurs equipped with satellite stations for help in listening for signals from a retroreflective laser sail that is scheduled to be deployed later this week. The sail is currently attached to a 1U CubeSat that was launched early Tuesday, December 2, 2025 from the International Space Station, but will separate and become its own free-flying spacecraft equipped with four tiny “ChipSat” flight computers that will transmit telemetry data back to Earth. The Road To Victory Military Museum in Stuart will host “Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day” on Saturday, December 6th beginning at 10:00 AM. To promote the event, the Martin County Amateur Radio Association will be operating Special Event Station K4V at the museum.

As reported by the Space Weather web site, “Sunspot 4274 erupted again today, Nov. 4th (1734 UTC), producing an X1.8-class solar flare. The explosion was dramatic. Extreme UV radiation caused a shortwave radio blackout over South America, and a CME is probably emerging from the blast site. *** POSTED 2025-10-30 *** United Nations Amateur Radio Station 4U1UN Celebrates 77 Years of Operation. The United Nations Amateur Radio Club (UNARC), operating as 4U1UN, proudly marks 77 years of worldwide radio communication from the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
Founded in 1948 as K2UN, the club received its current callsign 4U1UN in 1978. The station is located on the 42nd floor of the UN Secretariat Building located in midtown Manhattan. The station is operated remotely via a Flex-6600 SDR and ACOM 500S amplifier.

A decision by the Belarus Commission of Radio Frequencies has authorized use of the 50-52 MHZ band for amateur radio services, including satellite. Operation will be permitted to radio amateurs holding Class A licenses upon receipt of amendments to their current licenses. *** POSTED 2025-10-18 *** FCC Announces Intent to Delete Obsolete Regulations. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced plans to delete or modify almost 400 obsolete regulations, including four minor provisions of Part 97 governing amateur radio. *** POSTED 2025-10-14 *** Parks on the Air (POTA) – Activators – Hunters: What’s it all about? Parks On The Air is a program that encourages amateur radio operators to venture away from their shack and operate their radios in the great outdoors. Hams who venture to a designated park to operate are known as Activators. Hams who make successful contacts with Activators are known as Hunters.
Designated parks include State and Federal Parks, as well as certain National Historic Sites and Wildlife Management Areas. The program offers awards for both Hunters and Activators who achieve certain milestones.

*** POSTED 2025-10-10 *** NOAA Space Weather Scales. Similar to hurricanes, solar storms are also graded on a 5-point scale. Geomagnetic storms, solar radiation conditions and radio blackouts are assigned severity ratings between 1 to 5 by NOAA, with 1 being least severe and 5 being most severe. *** POSTED 2025-09-29 *** NASA seeking hams to track upcoming moon mission. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is seeking volunteers to passively track the 2026 Artemis II Orion spacecraft as it travels to the Moon and returns to Earth. The Artemis II mission will take place no later than April, 2026.
With the growing focus on commercialization of space, NASA wants to further understand industry’s tracking capabilities. The Question Pool Committee of the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC) has announced the immediate removal of Extra-Class question E6D07 from the Element 4 Extra-Class question pool. The decision was made after it was determined that the question contained more than one correct answer.
The current Element 4 Extra-Class pool, effective July 1, 2024, remains valid through June 30, 2028. Effective immediately VE teams should refrain from using any Element 4 exam booklets containing question E6D07. More info available here: ARRL VEC Update.

***POSTED 2025-08-05 *** Mystery of Callsign A35HD is solved. In March of this year there was much HF activity occurring using the Tonga call A35HD. Since this call had never before been on the air and no records of the call could be found anywhere, many were posting a caution to the various spotting sites warning that A35HD might be a pirate call. Well, just recently the mystery was solved when the Tonga Ministry of Information & Communications confirmed it had indeed issued a license with that call. Yukon Territory now has its own designator “YU.” The other two Canadian territories (Northwest territory and Nunavut) continue to use the Territories (TER) designation. This change may have some impact on field day QSOs and contests where state / territory designators are exchanged as part of the contact. The Bob Evans restaurant where the group has held its monthly breakfast get together for the past several years has permanently closed. As a result, it may be necessary to cancel the upcoming July 11 gathering while efforts are underway to find a new location where the group can meet. Watch for an email announcement during the week of July 6th.
Our team is already at work searching for a new meeting location. You can help us in our search. If you have an idea for a location where the group can meet at 9:00 AM on the 2nd Friday of the month, please share your suggestion by sending an email to treasurecoasthams@gmail.com. Our team will be sure to include your suggestion in our search.
The ideal meeting location should satisfy the following criteria:
- Be centrally located in Port Saint Lucie (group participants come from all Treasure Coast counties)
- Have a semi-private space available without charge (so noise and speakers do not disturb others)
- Have a reputation for quality food and service
- Offer reasonable prices
- Be capable of handling a group of 10 to 20 participants
- Be willing to prepare individual checks for each participant
- Have convenient parking close to the restaurant

Per an ARRL announcement, “As a part of the ongoing modernization of the ARRL systems infrastructure, LoTW will be receiving major upgrades to the operating system it is running on, the relational database system it uses to store and access logbook and awards data, and server hosting, where it will be fully migrated to the cloud. These changes will, among other improvements, ensure LoTW performance needs can be better met based on user demand.”

A recent agreement between the United Kingdom and Mauritius has turned sovereignty of the entire Chagos Island chain except for Diego Garcia over to Mauritius. The application period for the YOTA 2025 Junior Camp is open thru June 1st. For young hams under the age of 15 accompanied by a parent, the Junior Camp is a 3 day weekend activity taking place from July 25-27, 2025. It offers young hams an opportunity to meet other young hams, participate in unique experiences with radio related technologies, and build relationships with mentors and peers. The IOTA Directory currently lists Pillar Rock as the only island qualifying for the Andhra Pradesh State North group AS-178P. A recent investigation of Pillar Rock based on drone photos and videos has raised serious concerns about the safety of an IOTA radio operation. Management decided that any attempt to establish a radio operation from Pillar Rock would be too dangerous. Thus, they are removing it as an AS-178P qualifier effective immediately. The Board of Directors of Radio Amateurs of Canada voted unanimously to cancel RAC’s plans to operate a booth at Hamvention (Dayton) in Xenia, Ohio in May. The reason given is strained relations due to recent trade disputes and tariffs imposed by the U. S. government. Click for more info.

***POSTED 2025-04-08*** Colorado State University Releases Their Extended Forecast for the 2025 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season
Colorado State Forecasters anticipate that the 2025 Atlantic basin hurricane season will experience above normal activity. Their early forecast calls for 17 named storms (30-year average is 14.4); 9 hurricanes (30-year average is 7.2); and 4 major hurricanes (30-year average is 3.2).

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center believes Solar Cycle 25 has peaked and the decline is underway. A chart of cycle 25 progression shows sunspot activity and radio flux peaked in August of last year and have been slowly declining since. The charts also show predictions for the next few years. The island is #38 on the Club Log Most Wanted List. Located in the French Southern and Antarctic Territories, a fire has been burning since January 15, 2025. It is reported that over 50% of the island has burnt. Despite the passage of two storms, numerous hot spots remain and the fire is expected to re-ignite.
