***POSTED 2025-04-20*** Youth On The Air (YOTA) Junior Camp Application Now Open

The application period for the YOTA 2025 Junior Camp is open thru June 1st. For young hams under the age of 15 accompanied by a parent, the Junior Camp is a 3 day weekend activity taking place from July 25-27, 2025. It offers young hams an opportunity to meet other young hams, participate in unique experiences with radio related technologies, and build relationships with mentors and peers. ***POSTED 2025-04-14*** Recent NOAA Staff Reductions Impact Space Weather Prediction Center

According to a report on Space.com, an anticipated reduction in Space Weather Prediction Center services due to the staff reductions could result in impacts to the electric power industry, aviation, emergency management, human spaceflight, agriculture, radio communications and more. ***POSTED 2025-04-13*** Islands On The Air Management Announces Changes to Andhra Pradesh State North Group AS-178P

The IOTA Directory currently lists Pillar Rock as the only island qualifying for the Andhra Pradesh State North group AS-178P. A recent investigation of Pillar Rock based on drone photos and videos has raised serious concerns about the safety of an IOTA radio operation. Management decided that any attempt to establish a radio operation from Pillar Rock would be too dangerous. Thus, they are removing it as an AS-178P qualifier effective immediately. In its place they added Hope Island at 16º 58N, which will become effective September 1, 2025. Read the full announcement here.

***POSTED 2025-04-12*** Radio Amateurs of Canada Cancels Plans to Participate in Hamvention

The Board of Directors of Radio Amateurs of Canada voted unanimously to cancel RAC’s plans to operate a booth at Hamvention (Dayton) in Xenia, Ohio in May. The reason given is strained relations due to recent trade disputes and tariffs imposed by the U. S. government. Click for more info.

***POSTED 2025-04-09*** ARRL® DXCC® Statement concerning Mount Athos Operation SV1GA/A

The ARRL® DXCC® Desk has determined that the operation by a DXpedition team from Mount Athos meets the DXCC award program’s accreditation criteria. Contacts with the team, which operated in January 2025 using the call sign SV1GA/A, will therefore count toward DXCC®. Click for full details.

***POSTED 2025-04-08*** Colorado State University Releases Their Extended Forecast for the 2025 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season

Colorado State Forecasters anticipate that the 2025 Atlantic basin hurricane season will experience above normal activity. Their early forecast calls for 17 named storms (30-year average is 14.4); 9 hurricanes (30-year average is 7.2); and 4 major hurricanes (30-year average is 3.2).

***POSTED 2025-04-04*** Solar Cycle 25 has Peaked and is on the Decline

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center believes Solar Cycle 25 has peaked and the decline is underway. A chart of cycle 25 progression shows sunspot activity and radio flux peaked in August of last year and have been slowly declining since. The charts also show predictions for the next few years. The Young Ladies Radio League is accepting applications for three 2025 scholarships. The scholarships are available to female amateur radio license holders studying communications, radio, electronics, or Amateur Radio related arts and sciences. The island is #38 on the Club Log Most Wanted List. Located in the French Southern and Antarctic Territories, a fire has been burning since January 15, 2025. It is reported that over 50% of the island has burnt. Despite the passage of two storms, numerous hot spots remain and the fire is expected to re-ignite. This year’s event will feature two 10-hour operating windows: Saturday, April 26 1600 UTC (12 noon EDT) to Sunday, April 27 0159 UTC (9:59 PM EDT), and Sunday, April 27 1200 UTC (8:00 AM EDT) to Sunday 2159 UTC (5:59 PM EDT). The goal is to have all 67 Florida counties on the air. All Florida hams are encouraged to participate. 2025-02-21 – The Hurricane Watch Net Celebrates 60th Anniversary This Year – The net, which was founded in September 1965, is currently looking to add additional net control stations. Training will be provided. Bi-lingual skills, while not necessary, are a plus – especially Spanish, French and Creole. More information is available here: Hurricane Watch Net web site.

2025-02-16 – New Amateur Callsigns issued by Russia – Russian officials have announced new amateur callsign prefixes for regions near the contested areas of Ukraine. The Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhee and Kehrson regions are affected. Click for details: New Russian Prefixes.

2025-02-15 – RigExpert’s Administrative Offices in Ukraine Destroyed. The company reports their administrative offices in Ukraine were destroyed in a Russian missile attack. Fortunately all team members are safe. More info on their Facebook page.

2025-02-14 – Emergency Preparedness Act Reintroduced. ARRL® is reporting that the act, which would override some HOA restrictions and allow amateur radio operators to install antennas needed to serve their communities, has been reintroduced in Congress.
